DURHAM – Behind an offensive explosion that began with 11 runs in the first inning, Duke softball cruised to a 19-0 win over East Carolina, in a rain-adjusted, seven-inning game on Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils have started the fall ball slate with a 4-0 record, outscoring their opponents 43-2. The 19 runs scored are also a Duke fall ball record, besting the 16 scored against Winthrop on Oct. 26, 2019.
Four different Blue Devils recorded multi-RBI games, with graduate student
Rachel Crabtree going 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. The Blue Devils got three home runs in the game, including a grand slam by senior
Caroline Jacobsen. Sophomore
Claire Davidson started in the circle, with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Sophomores
Jala Wright and
Lillie Walker preserved the shutout with four more scoreless frames and three strikeouts.
The Blue Devils would strike early and often, beginning with the 11-run bottom of the first inning. Right out of the gate, senior
Kyla Morris tripled, and Crabtree doubled her in for a 1-0 lead. Not content for just one, the Blue Devils scored Crabtree and then loaded the bases for Jacobsen. The Tallahassee, Fla., native would launch a grand slam off the camera well in center field to extend the lead to 6-0.
Quickly back on the offensive attack after the home run, the bases were quickly loaded again, giving Crabtree another opportunity to hit. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native added two more RBIs with a single that ultimately scored a third on an error by the Pirates. Freshman
Ana Gold would cap of the inning with her third home run of the fall ball season on a two-run blast to left centerfield to take an 11-0 lead.
The game would settle down for a few innings but was sparked again when junior
Kamryn Jackson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 12-0 lead. Duke would quickly load the bases and got back-to-back two-RBI knocks from graduate student
Jameson Kavel and Crabtree to extend the lead to 16-0.
While pitching continued to stifle the Pirates, Duke got additional runs in the sixth and seventh innings, as sophomore
Sarah Goddard and senior
Deja Davis helped add to the tally with RBI hits.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Sunday, facing off against UNC-Greensboro at 1 p.m. in the second game of the weekend series.
