EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Freshman
Luke Sample is three strokes off the lead and the Duke men's golf team sits in a tie for fourth place at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, which was halted in the second round on Monday due to darkness.
The tournament resumes early Tuesday to conclude the second round and play the final 18 holes at the par-72 Maidstone Club in East Hampton, N.Y.
The Blue Devils are 10-over as a team midway through the second round but were gaining ground on the leaders when play was suspended. Duke opened with a 14-over 302 in the first round, as the field battled heavy rain and windy conditions throughout the day, and was a tournament-low 4-under in the second round when darkness fell.
Sample opened with a 2-over 74 in round one and started the afternoon with four birdies and four pars over the first 10 holes in round two to climb into a tie for third at even par. Sophomores
Jimmy Zheng (73-43/through 10 holes) and
Ian Siebers (78-34/through 9 holes) are each 3-over par and tied for 12th.
Freshman
Kelly Chinn is 6-over (77-43/through 10 holes) and tied for 26th, while senior
Quinn Riley is tied for 45th at 9-over (81-38/through 9 holes). Playing individually, sophomore
Cameron Martinez-Piedra is 61st at 14-over (85-43/through 10 holes).
Northwestern paces the 12-team field at 1-over, followed by Georgia Tech (+6), Virginia (+9), Duke (+10) and Liberty (+10) round out the tightly-bunched top five. The Yellow Jackets' Ross Steelman tops the individual leaderboard at 3-under.
When play resumes Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET, Duke remains paired with George Washington and Northwestern.
