DURHAM – With the Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement (ACE) Program having wrapped up its sixth year in 2021, Duke Athletics looks back at another successful summer.
ACE in Place offered five virtual service programs focused on supporting community-based organizations located in Peru, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam (sessions I and II). Built off the success of ACE in Place 2020 and virtual prototype programs that were tested last fall and winter, virtual programs allowed ACE the opportunity to continue to offer impactful summer service experiences for Duke and Stanford student-athletes in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

"As a sophomore in high school scrolling through the Duke Athletics website in awe, the ACE Program was an experience that immediately caught my eye. Travel abroad, live with fellow student-athletes, connect with people at Stanford and serve an international community partner? It seemed too good to be true. I knew that if I were to somehow miraculously end up at Duke, the ACE Program was the first thing I would sign up for."
- Sydney Yap, Volleyball
ACE IN PLACE | SOUTH AFRICA
Supporting food distribution and nutrition programs in South Africa with a focus on sustainable and ethical initiatives.

"The ACE program has been a memorable experience, which has broadened my world perspective. Working with SA Harvest was very rewarding in knowing we were doing work which would help them become even more efficient in reducing waste and distributing food."
- Devin Connell, Men's Cross Country/Track & Field
ACE IN PLACE | THAILAND

"I had the privilege of working with an incredible group of individuals during my time with ACE in Place Thailand. Each person I interacted with had a unique background, different interests, and different areas of expertise. But they all had one thing in common: the passion to make a difference."
- Finn Hossfeld, Fencing
ACE IN PLACE | VIETNAM (SESSIONS I & II)

"I am going to remember this experience for the rest of my life. I am so grateful to everyone that made ACE possible this summer! Interacting with different cultures or people, or participating in different service activities doesn't require a plane ticket, it can be at your kitchen table on a laptop, and it can be equally, if not more rewarding, than in-person service."
- Stephanie Zempolich, Women's Lacrosse
In a partnership with Stanford, The ACE Program provides funding for accepted Duke student-athletes to participate in three-week, immersive summer service experiences with an international community partner. The program is made possible by the generous support of David Rubenstein and Peter and Helen Bing.
