Siebers Leads the Way Saturday in Georgia

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Sophomore Ian Siebers fired a 3-under 69 on Saturday, leading the way for the Duke men's golf team as action continued at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga.

Siebers was 3-under for the day, is 5-under through 36 holes and sits in a tie for eighth place with the final round to come on Sunday. As a team, Duke was 3-over Saturday and is 5-under for the tournament to sit in ninth place.

Opening his round on the 10th hole Saturday, Siebers began the day with a birdie on the par-4 446-yard hole, and then birdied three of the final five on the front to turn in 2-under 34. After eight consecutive pars on the back, the Bellevue, Wash., carded a birdie on par-5 ninth (his 18th) to shoot 69.

Of Siebers' 11 rounds this season, 10 have been played in par or better.

As for the Blue Devils on Saturday, freshman Luke Sample and sophomore Jimmy Zheng are each tied for 33rd at even-par 144. Sample posted a 1-over 73, while Zheng carded a three-over 75. Freshman Kelly Chinn is tied for 42nd at 1-over 145 after a 75 on Saturday, while senior Quinn Riley is tied for 55th at 3-over 147 after his second-round 74.

No. 17 Pepperdine holds the 36-hole lead at 26-under par, followed by No. 9 Texas A&M (-22), No. 21 Tennessee (-18), No. 16 Wake Forest (-17) and No. 4 Stanford (-15) to round out the top five. Pepperdine's Joe Highsmith is the individual leader at 16-under.

Duke is paired with ACC rivals Georgia Tech and Virginia for Sunday's final round, which begins for the trio at 8:30 a.m. on the first hole.

The Blue Devils also had three golfers in individual action at the Grandover Collegiate, which began Saturday with 36 holes at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

Graduate student Qi wen Wong carded a pair of 2-over 74 rounds and is tied for 41st at 4-over 148. Freshman John Peters opened with a 79 and followed with a 76 in the afternoon and is tied for 78th at 11-over 155. Sophomore Daniel Uranga is tied for 92nd at 17-over 161 (77-84). Sunday's final round in Greensboro begins at 8:30 a.m.
