DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's lacrosse will be well represented this weekend in a historic "Super Sixes" tournament hosted by USA Lacrosse, Oct. 23-24, in Sparks, Md. Former Blue Devils
Justin Guterding, Patrick Resch and
Brad Smith will don the red, white and blue for the United States, while junior
Dyson Williams will represent Canada.
USA Lacrosse, with support from World Lacrosse and participating Iroquois and Canadian federations, will host the tournament featuring three nations in a round-robin tournament for both men and women. All three will help organize the event, which will be played at William G. Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse's complex.
Williams, an experienced box player, will see his first Sixes action Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1:15 pm, when Canada faces off against Haudenosaunee. The Whitby, Ontario native also suited up for Canada's national team last weekend against the United States and Virginia.
Guterding, Resch and Smith all have previous experiences with Sixes after taking part in the training camp at USA Lacrosse in July and again at the Lake Placid Summit Classic in August. Resch and Smith also were with the USA National Team last weekend, earning wins over Canada and Virginia at the USA Fall Classic.
Resch is coming off a championship run with Chaos in the PLL, helping to anchor the defense as a short stick and transition midfielder. Guterding and Smith finished as the runner-up with the Whipsnakes.
Sixes is a new discipline of lacrosse and will be formally known as World Lacrosse Sixes. It is a fast-paced version of the sport played on a smaller field (70 x 36 meters), with fewer players (6 v 6), a condensed game length (four 8-minute quarters) and a 30-second shot clock. Sixes will be the format used for lacrosse at
The World Games 2022, a multi-sport Olympic-style event, in Birmingham, Ala., next summer.
