DURHAM – Duke men's soccer freshmen
Ruben Mesalles and
Shakur Mohammed have been named to TopDrawerSoccer's Midseason Top-100 freshman list, as the organization announced on Wednesday.
Mesalles was ranked as the nation's fourth-ranked freshman, checking in as the top defensive freshman in the country. Mohammed was tabbed the No. 29 freshman in the nation and the ninth-highest ranked forward.
Splitting time between left back and in the midfield, Mesalles has played a big role in all facets of the game. The Longboat, Fla., native has one goal and three assists for five points, scoring the winning goal against Michigan on Sept. 2. Mesalles has also stepped into play left back, a position he hadn't previously played, and helped the Duke defense allow just five goals in 11 games.
A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Mohammed ranks second on the team in points with eight, recording two goals and four assists. Mohammed recorded the first multi-assist game by a Blue Devil since Max Moser did against Harvard on Sept. 8, 2019 and ranks fourth in the ACC in assists per game (0.44). The midfielder has formed one of the top scoring pairings in the nation up front with sophomore
Thorleifur Ulfarsson, combining for 27 points.
Both Blue Devils will be back in action on Friday as No. 9 Duke hosts No. 23 Clemson at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
