DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's soccer team played its third intrasquad scrimmage Sunday evening in preparation for the upcoming 2020 campaign. Blue came away with the 2-1 victory in a well-balanced and hard-fought match.
Personnel switched between the teams over the course of the three periods and White nearly tied the match up in the final third, but early goals from Blue in the opening stanza proved to be enough.
Blue was excellent in the first period, with dynamic attacks through the midfield and down the sides en route to a 2-0 lead at the first break.
Kristófer Garðarsson gave Blue the lead in the early going on an assist from senior
Conor Kelly. After continuing to control the run of play for the next 15 minutes, rookie
Amir Daley made it a 2-0 game with quality individual effort in the box.
Daley's goal started with a 50-50 win by
Nick Pariano about 30 yards from goal. The winning tackle from Pariano allowed the freshman midfielder to take advantage of numbers as he fed Daley into the box. Daley did well to slide through the defense with his deft touch and snuck it inside far post for the lead.
With both teams featuring different lineups after the opening 30 minutes, the second period was an even battle between the two sides.
Blue had a few looks at goal and the best chance came from the foot of senior
Daniel Wright, but goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill made a diving save to push the shot wide of the net. Hamill also pulled in the ensuing corner kick with ease to give White possession again.
As the final seconds ticked down, White nearly put one on the board when
Cameron Kerr snuck into the box, but his touch sailed over the bar to keep the game 2-0 in favor of Blue.
In the third and final period of the night, White held the majority of possession and put pressure on Blue's backline. White found openings both through the middle and especially down the left side.
Sophomore forward
Scotty Taylor, dynamic in the offensive third, had a few chances at goals, including a fantastic strike from 12 yards denied by a stellar save from
Will Pulisic.
Taylor ended his frustration, scoring midway through the period to bring White within one. Rookie
Antino Lopez started it all with a superb flighted service to Kerr on the left side of the box. Kerr collected it and slotted it back across the goal where Taylor took a touch and turned to shoot it past Pulisic.
White, despite having the better of play in the final session, couldn't come away with the equalizer as Blue finished the night with the 2-1 win.
Duke will see its first true opponent next Friday, Sept. 11 in a scrimmage at NC State. The Blue Devils are slated to officially kick off the 2020 season Sept. 21 at Kentucky.
