DURHAM, N.C. – Duke rowing head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno has announced that
Reed Kenny,
Caroline Olsen,
Amelia Shunk and
Gabriella Salvati will serve as team captains for the 2020-21 season.
"We're very excited to see Reed, Carolina, Amelia and Gabby lead our team this year," Cooke Carcagno said. "With the uncertainty last spring presented as well as the additional measures we are taking to be safe as a team, we're in really good hands with these four."
Kenny and Olsen, both entering their senior season, will take on the roles and responsibilities as team captains for the first time in their Duke careers. Kenny's last full season – the 2019 spring campaign – saw her jump from being a leader in the 2V8 lineup to a key piece in the varsity 8+ boat that captured silver at the ACC Championship. The Alexandria, Va., native was named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete, which recognizes her contributions both athletically and academically, in each of the last two seasons.
Olsen, a native of Healdsburg, Calif., was a mainstay in the 4V8 lineup for the Blue Devils in 2019. During that season, she helped the 4V8 crew take first place at the Cooper Sprints and second at the Big Ten/ACC Dual, while competing in 3V8 races. At the Carolina Cup this past March – the lone race for Duke in the shortened 2020 season – Olsen aided the 4V8 group to a second-place finish with a time of 7:19.7.
Shunk will serve as a team captain for the third consecutive year. The Corte Madera, Calif., native enters her junior year as one of the program's prominent contributors, as her freshman campaign in 2019 culminated with ACC Freshman of the Year honors. That spring, Shunk helped the varsity 4+ crew win Duke's first-ever gold medal at the ACC Championship before taking fifth at the NCAA Championships in the Petite Final. In March's Carolina Cup, she guided the V4 squad to a top finish that was over 23 seconds faster than second-place Clemson. Shunk was also named to the 2019 All-ACC Academic Team and was a 2020 CRCA Scholar-Athlete.
Rounding out the captains is Salvati, a junior from Medford, N.J., who was set to be a key member of the V8 lineup this past spring. In 2019, Salvati's freshman season, she competed a majority of the season in the 2V8 boat that had first-place showings at the Carolina Cup, Cooper Sprints and Big Ten/ACC Dual. At the conference championship, Salvati was slotted in the varsity 8+ lineup that earned a silver medal and helped the Blue Devils secure a second-place team finish.
In selecting these four as team leaders on a roster of 52 student-athletes, Cooke Carcagno relied on the combined experience, work ethic and energy that each provides.
"Amelia has served as a captain before and knows how to keep the team enthusiastically engaged," she said. "Caroline, a former walk-on, brings her humble, hardworking attitude to every workout. Gabby is easy going in spirit, but is a tremendous athlete that prefers to outwork the room. Reed always had her sight set on being number one in every capacity. United we couldn't be in better hands."
The Blue Devils are set to be back on the water for official practices beginning next week at Lake Michie. For more information on Duke rowing, follow the team on
