Blue Devils Return to Campus
The Duke men's lacrosse team returned to campus August 10 to go through the day of testing and the acclimatization process before starting classes this past August 17. The Blue Devils welcome back 10 of the 2020 seniors who gained an extra year of eligibility after COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of the 2020 campaign. Duke will conduct its fall sessions as close to normal as possible as the team begins to put all the pieces together.
In addition, head coach men's lacrosse
John Danowski welcome four graduate school transfers – Mike Adler of Saint Joseph's, Dan O'Connell from Holy Cross and Princeton's Phillip Robertson and Michael Sowers.
Bolstering the talented corps of veteran players is a class of seven rookies, which includes the nation's top player in Brennan O'Neill. He is joined by St. Anthony's teammates
Jake Naso and
Aidan Danenza.
Cole Krauss of Delbarton and
Charlie O'Connor from Paul VI joined the St. Anthony's trio on the Under Armour All-America teams. Rounding out the group are
Evan Barr (Somerville) and
Ryan Mackenzie (Christian Brothers Academy).
Costabile Garners Major League Lacrosse Award
Former Blue Devil great and 2012 National Midfielder of the Year CJ Costabile continues to show he's one of the best. Costabile, a leader of Major League Lacrosse's Chesapeake Bayhawks, was voted the MLL's 2020 Signature LSM of the Year.
Costabile, coming off a 2019 MLL title with the Bayhawks, was outstanding yet again. He tallied three goals, two of which came behind the two-point line, two assists and picked up 14 ground balls, while helping to anchor the defense. In a win over the New York Lizards, Costabile was the player of the game with a pair of two-pointers and two assists.
Duke Trio Among Top 20 Players in the World
On the heels of the Premier Lacrosse League's Championship Series in Utah Kyle Devitte and Chris Rosenthall of Inside Lacrosse took time to compile their list of the world's top 20 players. Three
Blue Devils were on the list, second to Maryland's four and tied with the three from Notre Dame.
Jordan Wolf came in at No. 13 after finishing the series with 18 points to rank sixth in the PLL and playing at least one fewer game than the top five scorers.
"A constant and pervasive force, Wolf "returned" to elite status in the hearts and minds of fickle lacrosse fans with a very successful PLL campaign. It's almost like people forgot that Wolf was, and still is, the most dangerous dodging attackman off the catch that has walked the earth."
At No. 15 is Justin Guterding, who had 16 points from a balanced 10 goals and six goals.
"The master of body control has added scoring while getting thrown to the ground to his ever-expanding arsenal of tricks and frivolities around the crease. Guterding worked with far fewer picks than he did in 2019, and it showed early on, but eventually STX's starman found his groove using screens instead and the Chrome began to rely on him as a primary scoring option."
Cade Van Raaphorst, a two-time first-team All-American, landed at No. 19 overall and is one of four defensemen on the list. Van Raaphorst led all defensemen in ground balls with 21 and tied for the lead with 12 caused turnovers.
"A true team defender alone on an island of Alpha checkers, Van Raaphorst brought reason to a chaotic and disorganized backline. His defensive numbers are eye-popping as he tied for the lead in caused turnovers (with Matt McMahon) with 12 cookies and also scooped 21 groundballs."
Matt Danowski a Top Five Teammate
Mark Glicini's Five All-Time Teammates
In a new series, 5-and-5, from US Lacrosse Magazine, Chaos midfielder Mark Glicini, who won the 2019 Teammate of the Year at the PLL Awards, is asked his five all-time teammates. On the list of five included Duke assistant coach and 2007 Tewaaraton Award winner
Matt Danowski.
Glicini, a 2016 graduate of Yale, commented that despite a near decade of age difference, Danowski also treated him as an equal and a peer. He calls Danowski a faucet, meaning he's always giving his energy to other people.
"Matt cares on such a deep level. I feel like he's got an ocean of enthusiasm inside of him, whether he commands a huddle or we're just having a simple dinner conversation. He has this energy and enthusiasm. The Sanskrit word for it is
shaktipat. It's this exchange of energy. Your energy is either worth catching or avoiding. His is definitely worth catching all the time."
