DURHAM, N.C. β Despite international travel for The Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program (ACE) being canceled for the summer of 2020, the ACE Program has multiple past participants who continue to demonstrate the values ACE taught them as part of being an ACE Ambassador. This week, we highlightΒ
Haley Schleicher.
In February 2014, Duke's Board of Trustee's, chaired by Duke alumnus David Rubenstein, traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., and met with officials from Stanford to determine opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions. The challenging schedules of student-athletes, which make participating in off-campus activities such as study abroad programs difficult, was identified as an issue the two universities could work together on in order to develop a solution, leading to the genesis of ACE. The ACE program was officially announced in Spring 2015.
Recent Duke graduate and member of the field hockey team, Schleicher traveled to China in 2018 with the ACE Program.
"I feel so grateful to be a part of the ACE community," Schleicher said. "While in China, I particularly enjoyed being immersed in the culture through various excursions in the Tibetan region while also interacting with the local community. However, the most special part of the program was building friendships with the girls in this picture. I cherish the relationships that were formed in China and have enjoyed feeling connected to the wider ACE community back on campus."
With a major in psychology with a minor in global health, Schleicher has volunteered with the Ronald McDonald house and was also a member of the Mastery Program through the Keenan Institute of Ethics, which provides tutoring services for refugees in Durham. Regarding ACE, Haley loved getting to know the kids at the camp through various sports and educational workshops. She believes the ACE in China Program will continue to aid in her growth in personal and professional endeavors.
"I think the ACE Program is an incredible opportunity for student-athletes to embrace a culture drastically different from their own. The program gave me friendships that will last way longer than the program did and a broader perspective of the world."
Currently, Schleicher is a member of the U.S. Women's National Field Hockey team.
