DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.
Emily Gjertsen will make her way to Durham after graduating from Tuckahoe High School. Gjertsen, a native of Eastchester, N.Y., will join the Blue Devil swimming and diving team as a distance freestyle swimmer.
"Duke is an amazing academic school and has one of the top swim programs in the country," Gjertsen said. "Upon stepping foot on campus, the coaches and swim team made me feel like part of the Duke family. I am so excited for next season to join and compete for the team."
She enjoyed a successful career in the water throughout her high school years. Gjertsen competed under Dominick Galimi at Tuckahoe High School and for John Collins at Badger, her club team.
Gjertsen was an Olympic Trails qualifier in the 800 freestyle and a two-time All-American in the 500 freestyle. She competed at Summer and Winter Nationals, placing 26th in the 1500 freestyle at the Summer event. At the ISCA TYR Junior Nationals, Gjertsen earned first-place finishes in the 400 and 1500 freestyle. In the state competition, she finished second in the 500 freestyle.
Out of the pool, Gjertsen was a member of National Honor Society and a Science Olympian.
Emily Ann Gjertsen was born February 28, 2002 to parents Gary and Ann Gjertsen. She is the eldest of three, with one younger brother, Owen, and a younger sister, Allision.
