DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.
Zach McIntyre will head east from his hometown of Novato, Calif., to join the Blue Devils in Durham as a member of the Duke swimming and diving program following his graduation from Novato High School this spring.
"I chose Duke because of its great balance of academics and high-level swimming," McIntyre said. "Duke showed me how it provides a great opportunity for overall growth and success. From the moment I left my recruiting trip, I knew I wanted to be able to call Duke home. I am beyond thrilled to be a Blue Devil!"
At Novato High School, McIntyre was named the team MVP and Marin County Athletic League Athlete of the Year under head coach Denise McIntyre. He currently holds the record in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle as well as 100 butterfly at NHS. At the MCAL conference meet, McIntyre placed first in the 100 freestyle his sophomore and junior years while also winning the 50 freestyle his junior season. He was also a four-time finalist at the state meet throughout his career. Unfortunately, McIntyre's senior season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
On the club scene, McIntyre competed for the Marin Pirates under coaches Tom Ever and Victor Wales. He was a Junior Nationals qualifier as a junior and invited to the Zone Select Camp (featuring the top swimmers in the Western United States) as a sophomore.
McIntyre excelled out of the pool as well. He was a three-time Academic All-America and an Academic Scholar Athlete, North Coast Presidents List for Outstanding Academic Achievement and North Coast Section CIF Scholar-Athlete all four years.
Born Zachary Michael McIntyre to parents Michael and Denise McIntyre on July 18, 2002, Zach has an older brother (DJ) and younger sister (Kaley). His mother swam collegiately at UC Davis from 1988-92. His paternal grandfather, Donald McIntyre, swam at Florida from 1965-68.
