She is coming off averaging 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.0 assists as a sophmore. She scored a season-high 26 points against Troy as she hit 7-11 field goals and 5-of-8 three-pointers in 26 minutes.
GoDuke.com: Where are you now?
Miela Goodchild: Home in Australia with my family.
GD: How has everything been in Australia with the coronavirus and how much of a lockdown have you been in?
MG: Everything is going well and we are progressing here in Australia. When I came back from the states, I was in strict lockdown for two weeks. Australia has been following social distancing rules since I arrived, and it has definitely plateaued now but social distancing rules are still in place with group gatherings and crossing state borders however they are easing due to the positive progress.
GD: How was finishing up with online classes/exams since everyone was sent home due to the coronavirus?
MG: Finishing classes online was an interesting challenge, especially with the time difference. It was going to be quite difficult and inconvenient to do classes on North Carolina time as done would be at 2 a.m., Australia time but fortunately I was able to watch back the recordings of my classes and do the work back here in Australia at a suitable time. I found zoom and online classes worked quite effectively. For French, it was quite challenging as usually you do a lot of talking in class and activities with partners, however that was altered. Overall, I thought the transition online was very efficient and effective so well done to Duke.
GD: How have you and your teammates been staying in contact, while being off campus?
MG: We chat a lot! We have a team chat and also through social media platforms where we chat casually replying to stories and everything happening. I can't wait to be back with them in person though!
GD: How have you been able to continue to work on your basketball skills and staying active during this time?
MG: I've been making the most of this strange time with corona. I've been doing home workouts, doing our Duke home gym programs, going on runs. I've been shooting at a school outdoor basketball hoop like I use to when I was younger and been doing great workouts with my skills coach.
GD: Have you picked up any new hobbies or done anything fun with the family?
MG: Yes we've been doing a lot of great, fun and new things. Normally I don't have much time for crafts however with this extra isolation time I have been able to do some revamping & up Cycling of clothes with my sister as we both love fashion and we made some cool outfits. We even did some craft sessions on Twitch that people could tune into. It's been great to just spend time with my family at home which I feel truly blessed to be able to.
GD: Have you been able to work on your cooking skills and if so what types of things have you been making?
MG: Yes absolutely! The whole family has been cooking up a storm! I've been trying heaps of new recipes too. I always like to try and stick to mainly healthy foods, but also been baking some sweets too. I've been cooking and baking from all different cuisines like Mediterranean, Turkish Japanese, Indian, French, Thai and of course Australian with my pavlova (dessert) variations and vegemite recipes. One veggie I've been really enjoying trialing with is zucchini, which I've made zucchini noodles, pizza and other cool recipes with zucchini as the base. One recipe that I trialed that I enjoyed was baking gluten free cinnamon scrolls with my grandma. For all the gluten free people out there, these are a keeper for a sweet treat. They turned out delicious!
GD: What do you miss most about being on campus?
MG: Well definitely playing for Duke in the Cameron and I'd have to say the access to Cameron and the K center courts. 24/7 access, being able to shoot whenever and as many times as you want a day, for as long as you want. Along side hanging and having laughs with my teammates and my friends.
GD: What books, television shows, podcasts or movies have you read or watched in the past few weeks?
MG: Shows I've gotten into is obviously the Last Dance as that's all about Michael Jordan and he is one of my favorite players. Actuality, when I was younger I use to read his books and biographies so that's been cool watching the show. Also a Russian friend got me and my parents into Homeland, which I know is an old television series but it's great action and intense so we are up to season five and the aim is to finish season eight by the time I head back to Duke. Movies, I've been watching a range of genres, but I've been nostalgic of late with Disney plus, and hitting up those original Disney movies like Snow White, Peter Pan etc. I'm rereading Kobe's mamba mentality and taking time out to study devotions and the bible. There has been a positive side to Covid and it's been great to have this extra downtime and to be able to do all this fun stuff which I don't normally have time to do.
