DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.
Emily Lenihan heads to Duke after finishing her high school career at Sacred Heart Academy. The Louisville, Kentucky native competes primarily in the backstroke and butterfly.
"I chose Duke because I knew it was a place where I could excel both academically and athletically," Lenihan said. "As soon as I met the team and coaches, I immediately connected with them. With the combination of the coaches, team, and academics, I knew this was a place I could call home."
Lenihan competed at Sacred Heart Academy under head coach Jim Luebbe and for the Lakeside Swim Team under coach Mike Deboor. During her tenure at Sacred Heart, Lenihan saw her team win the state championship her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Lenihan is also an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200 backstroke and helped set the state school record in the 200 medley relay as a senior.
Individually, Lenihan was a NISCA All-America selection on seven occasions, including twice in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 medley relay. She was named First Team All-State as a junior and to the All-Area team as a senior.
Out of the pool she was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and a four-year member of the Principal's List. In addition, Lenihan was named a Scholastic All-America selection as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Emily McCord Lenihan was born to parents Michael and Jennifer Lenihan on July 18, 2002 in Louisville, Ky. She has one brother, Teague.
