DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshmen class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.
Catherine Belyakov makes her way to Durham after the breaststroke and IM specialist wraps up a successful career at Quince Orchard High School.
"I chose Duke because when I spent time with the team and coaches, it felt like a family and I immediately felt so welcome," Belyakov said. "Also, there is value and challenge in both athletics and academics at Duke. I knew it was an experience that would be unmatched and was definitely somewhere I would love to be."
The Gaithersburg, Md., native enjoyed a stellar career in the pool as a high schooler. Overall, she was a six-time state champion (three-time 100 breaststroke champion and three-time 200 individual medley). She was a five-time NISCA All-American (three-time selection in the 200 individual medley and twice in the 100 breaststroke). Belyakov also set two records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
As a junior, Belyakov qualified for the US Open in the 100 breaststroke. During her senior season, she was the Metropolitan Champion in the 100 breaststroke and was named to the Washington Post Winter All-Met First Team.
She was coached by Staci Armezzani at Quince Orchard High School. On the club scene, Belyakov competed for the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club under coaches Scott Vekeman and Dave Crocker.
Throughout her time at Quince Orchard High, Belyakov was a member of National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Math Honors Society and Rho Kappa Honors Society (social studies). In addition, she gathered over 300 volunteer hours over her four years.
Catherine I Belyakov was born on June 28, 2020 in Rockville, Md., to her mother Irina Belyakov. She has a twin sister, Anastasia.
