DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshmen class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.

Zach Wassmer will join Colella's squad upon his graduation from Mills E. Godwin High School.
Â
"At Duke, I found a perfect blend of elite academics and athletics, alongside a university with rich traditions, a network of inspiring faculty and an engaged student body," Wassmer said. "For me, it was never a question of whether I wanted to be a Blue Devil – it was only how to become one."

Wassmer competed for Godwin High School and NOVA of Virginia Athletics under head coaches Hayden Workman and Geoff Brown, respectively. He capped off his high school career by receiving All-America consideration in the 200 medley relay, finishing fourth in the 500 freestyle and sixth in the 200 individual medley at the 5A Virginia State Championships.

His junior year brought an abundance of success, being a finalist in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley at the NCSA Spring Championships. At the NCSA Summer Championships, he placed ninth in the 1500 freestyle and reached the finals of the 400 individual medley. Wassmer also placed in the 200 individual medley (fifth) and 500 freestyle (seventh) at the 5A Virginia State Championships.

In his first two seasons of high school, he qualified for the Winter Junior nationals and NCSA Junior Championships as a sophomore. As a rookie, Wassmer was a finalist at the 2016 VSI LC Senior Championships in the 400 individual medley.

Out of the pool, Wassmer was a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-America honors, a National Merit Finalist and an AP Scholar with Distinction. In addition, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, English Honor Society and an officer of the Math Honor Society.

Zachary Ian Wassmer was born on January 24, 2002 to his parents Michael and Andrea Wassmer in Richmond, Va. He has two younger siblings, a brother, Owen, and a sister, Allie. His father played college football at Lafayette College from 1988-92. Following his career at Lafayette, he attended graduate school at Duke and received his master's in mathematics in 1993.
