DURHAM, N.C.—On this date, May 10, 2008 –
Matt Danowski became the NCAA' all-time leading scorer with a two-goal, five-assist performance as the top-ranked Blue Devils beat Loyola 12-7 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Danowski surpassed Air Force's Joe Vasta's record of 343 points with an assist on a Max Quinzani goal with five seconds remaining in the second quarter. The seven-point showing pushed Danowski's career total to 347.
The 2007 Tewaaraton Award winner finished his career with 353 points (170g, 183a) remain atop the Duke records book and rank fifth on the NCAA charts. His 170 goals are 26th and the 183 assists are seventh in NCAA history and fifth and first in the Duke records book, respectively. For his career, he averaged 4.41 points per game.
Danowski is one of 16 players in NCAA history to score 300 career points and one of six to amass at least 350. On the assists list, he is one of nine players to record at least 175 career assists. He is one of three Division I players to score at least 170 goals and 170 assists in his career. The other two were Lyle Thompson (15, 225a) and Joe Vasta (173g, 170a).
