DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshmen class for the 2020-21 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 15 signees in the coming weeks.
Lucas "Luke" Johnson will make his way to Durham to begin his career as a member of the Duke swimming and diving team after completing his high school career at Colonial Forge High School.
"Duke is the perfect mix of academic reputation, athletic prestige and personality," Johnson said. "When making my choice, the one thing that distinguished Duke from any other university was the image of Duke. It is recognizable, prestigious, and frankly, awesome. The reason I chose Duke is because, I am more than excited to become a part of a school that embodies this image."
At Colonial Forge, the Stafford, Va., native swam under Bianca West and earned Academic All-America status during his senior year.
Johnson swam for the Stingrays Swimming club under head coach Anthony Pedersen. He made the NCSA cut in seven events his sophomore year before making the Winter Junior Nationals in four events his junior year. Johnson's senior year garnered even more success as he qualified for the US Open National Championships and the Summer Junior Nationals in the 100 butterfly.
Out of the pool, Johnson was an active member of his community. At Colonial Forge, he was a member of Health Occupations Clube (HOSA), Film Studies Club, Deca Club and the Symphonic Band. Academically, he was a four-year member of the "A" Honor Roll. In addition to being involved at school, Johnson was a member of AXIS Youth Group and did Youth Works Mission Trips all four years of high school.
Lucas Michael Johnson was born on July 29, 2002 to parents Michael and Cynthia Johnson in Madison, Conn. He has one younger sister, Katie.
