DURHAM, N.C. – GoDuke.com recently chatted with freshman epeeist
Danny Campbell III to check in with him and look back on his first season with the Blue Devils that was cut short due to COVID-19 concerns.
Where are you now?
"Right now I am back home with my mom, dad and sister in Oakton, Va."
What are you doing to stay active?
"I am trying to stay active by running on our treadmill and walking in the woods behind my house."
How are you adjusting to online classes?
"On a whole, classes have been going well. Making the switch from in person to online classes has been a bit difficult for classes where we did physical work, such as my physics class where we had weekly lab and my engineering class where we built physical things. However, professors have been working hard to adapt the curriculum and keep things as similar to they would have been as possible. Additionally, professors have been super patient and accommodating as everyone adjusts to having online classes."
What was your favorite memory from the 2020 season?
"My favorite memory from the 2020 season was competing at the Duke Meet. Being able to fence in Card Gymnasium was really exciting. It was such a cool experience feeling the energy in the room as the whole team came out to cheer and support each other."
What do you miss most about being at Duke?
"The thing I miss most about Duke is all of my friends. I miss coming to practice every day and getting to do the thing I love with all of my friends."
Campbell III qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships for the first time during his rookie season.
He captured a bronze medal at the 2020 ACC Fencing Championships in South Bend, Ind., and secured a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on his home strips in Durham.
During the regular season, Campbell III posted a 42-28 overall record to lead the men's epee squad and was named ACC Fencer of the Week following his 11-3 performance at the Philadelphia Invitational in January.
