DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey is excited to announce its second addition to the 2020 recruiting class as Alayna Burns is set to join the Blue Devils for the 2020-2021 school year.
Burns, a midfielder and forward, is from Medford, N.J and attends Shawnee High School. A four-year letterwinner, Burns was named Second Team All-Conference as a sophomore and junior before earning First Team All-Conference status as a senior. During her senior year, Burns was Second Team All-Region, Second Team All-Group IV and a member of the 2019 Burlington County Times All-County Team.
Across her four years at Shawnee, Burns racked up 41 goals and 23 assists. As a sophomore, she recorded 17 goals and eight assists and as a senior, she tied her single-season high of 17 goals with 10 assists.
On the club scene, Burns started at South Jersey Edge in middle school before playing for Uprise FHC from her freshman to senior year. On the national stage, Burns has been participating with the NFC since 2017 on various teams. In 2019, Burns was selected for the U-19 NFC, Stars & Stripes Elite Game.
Off the field, Burns is the president of the Future Business Leaders of America, the vice president of Charity Water Renegades Club and the secretary of the 2020 Class Council. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Kids for Wish Kids, Latin and DECA clubs.
Born Alayna Shea Burns on January 10, 2002, she is the daughter of Paul and Melissa Burns and has one younger brother, Griffin.

"Battling with my club team to medal at NCC's – being the first team to establish our new club nationally."
How did you start playing field hockey?
"I walked onto a field hockey field for the first time in third grade and from then on, I never wanted to miss a chance to play the game."
Why did you choose Duke?
"For the elite academic and athletic opportunities of being a Duke student-athlete. I loved the 'DukeTrue' mindset encompassed by the supportive coaches and driven players."
If you could go back in time and give your freshman self some advice, what would it be?
"Stay your course and don't let anyone stop you."
