DURHAM, N.C. – GoDuke.com recently sat down with sophomore saberist
Alex Gorman to check in with her and look back on her most recent season that was cut short due to COVID-19 concerns.
Where are you now?
"I'm outside of Boston right now in my hometown, Wellesley, Mass. I'm staying at my house with my parents, my sister, and our dog."
What are you doing to stay active?
"I've been trying various strategies to stay active. Our strength & conditioning trainer Coach P (
Dan Perlmutter) gave us multiple workouts that I've been incorporating into my weekly routine. I've been doing a lot more stretching since we've been cooped up in the house all day. We also have a park where you can go hiking, and I've been taking my dog there a lot just to get some fresh air outside."
How are you adjusting to online classes?
"Online classes have been pretty good so far. It has been fun seeing my classmates and interacting with them, and all of my professors have been really supportive in helping us get used to this adjustment. I'd say the biggest challenge is trying to establish a routine, as some of my classes have prerecorded lectures that don't require attendance at all. Overall though, I'd say the transition has been pretty smooth."
What was your favorite memory from the 2020 season?
"I set some personal goals for myself at the beginning of the season, like making the podium at ACCs and requalifying for NCAAs, so it felt really good to accomplish those. More importantly though, I know we may not have been able to showcase our full potential, especially since our season was cut short early before NCAAs. However, seeing the passion we displayed throughout this spring constantly affirmed for me our amazing potential as a group, and it's always a highlight to see how much everyone cares about coming through for this team."
Gorman qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championship for the second consecutive year in 2020 and posted a 14th-place finish as a freshman in 2019.
Gorman helped spearhead a women's saber contingent that went 17-8 overall in the regular season as she collected 41 victories and 22 losses for a 65.1 win percentage, up from last year's 40 wins.
The sophomore notched a silver medal and All-ACC accolades in February at the ACC Fencing Championship, the first of her career. Gorman concluded the year at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional on her home strips in Durham with a fourth-place finish as she advanced to the final round of pool play.
