DURHAM, N.C. – For the 21st straight season, the Duke women's golf program has finished in the top 10 of the Golfweek national rankings as the Blue Devils closed the year at No. 4 under the direction of head coach
Dan Brooks.
Duke has now finished the season in the top five of the Golfweek ledger in seven out of the last eight years. The Blue Devils and Southern California are the only two programs to place in the top five of the national rankings seven times over the last eight years – Duke (7), Southern California (7), UCLA (6), Stanford (4) and Alabama (4).
The Blue Devils concluded the shortened 2019-20 campaign with one victory, two third place finishes and were first in stroke play qualifying at the East Lake Cup.
In the final 2019-20 Golfweek ledger, Southern California, Texas, Wake Forest, Duke and Arizona State rounded out the top five rankings.
Duke opened the spring season with an impressive seven-stroke victory at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Blue Devils knocked off nine top 10 teams in the challenge to give Brooks his 137th all-time win, which continues to lead all NCAA head coaches.
Following an 11-under-par, 273, in the second round, the Blue Devils held an eight-stroke lead heading into the final round. Duke carded a one-under-par, 283, and collected a seven-stroke victory at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. The 11-under-par score of 273 for the Blue Devils was the tied for third-lowest 18-hole ledger for Duke on a par 71 course.
At the East Lake Cup, the Blue Devils turned in a stroke play qualifying round of two-under-par, 286, to earn the top seed in match play. Senior
Ana Belac was five-under-par over her final seven holes on her way to finishing in a tie for first, individually.
Duke also tied for third at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and was third at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
With the Blue Devils' season coming to an abrupt ending in March, Duke was not able to head to Arizona in May to defend its NCAA Championship. Duke has won seven NCAA titles – 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2019.
