PITTSBORO, N.C. – Duke wrestling fell to Navy, 39-6, in a Sunday afternoon out-of-conference dual at Northwood High School.
Â
For the second meet in a row the Blue Devils were forced to forfeit at 125 and 141 pounds, dropping 12 quick points in the team score.
Â
Despite the final score though, Duke and Navy gave fans plenty to cheer about during the match. Four of the eight actual matches ended in a decision win with redshirt sophomore
Benjamin Anderson nearly taking down No. 7 Tanner Skidgel at 165 pounds.
Â
Anderson's nationally ranked foe saw himself quickly down 2-0 after a two-point takedown by the Pleasant Grove, Utah, native. Skidgel answered with a reversal and a stalling warning point to jump in front 3-2. Anderson tied things up in the second period when he recorded a point following an escape. Unfortunately, Skidgel took the third period thanks to an escape point and a riding time point to push the final score to 5-3.
Â
Wade Unger also had himself a battle at 149 pounds against Navy's Wyatt Long. The two kept things close and with only a minute left Unger found himself down just 6-5 to the junior. One final takedown by Long, however, secured the 8-5 win for the visitors.
Duke is back in action Friday, Feb. 14, when it welcomes Virginia to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. dual. The match will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra and will have live stats available via TrackWrestling.
