DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's fencing team closed out the annual Duke Meet Sunday afternoon in Card Gymnasium with a 2-3 overall record on the weekend.
"This weekend was tough," head coach
Alex Beguinet said. "We had very good teams who were some of the top ranked teams. It was a hard fight. It was good for them to fence against them to help them grow. Overall, both the men and women fenced hard throughout the weekend and that is great."
The Duke women picked up wins over Brandeis (21-6) and MIT (20-7) and fell to No. 3 Notre Dame (17-10), No. 6 Penn State (18-9) and No. 5 Temple (14-13) by one bout.
The women were led by sophomore
Alex Gorman (saber) with a team-leading eight victories on the day followed by
Ava Navarro (epee) and
Huda Aldadah (epee) with seven wins each. Gorman tallied an undefeated record versus sixth-ranked Penn State while Aldadah went 3-0 against third-ranked Notre Dame.
Duke will have some time off to prepare for the ACC Championships slated for Feb. 22-23 in South Bend, Ind., hosted by Notre Dame.
