DURHAM, N.C. – Duke kicks off the 2020 season with a weekend full of women's lacrosse. The Blue Devils open their 2020 campaign on Friday versus Gardner-Webb before hosting No. 3 Northwestern on Sunday. Both contests will be at Koskinen Staidum and broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
The Blue Devils enter the weekend coming off an 11-8 season in which the program scored 288 goals, the fourth most in Duke history, and was among the national leaders in draw controls and draw control percentage.

Duke faces Gardner-Webb for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils have done well against opponents from the Big South, holding a 10-1 record all-time. In their last meeting against a Big South opponent, the Blue Devils defeated Campbell 21-4 in Koskinen Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs open their sixth season of women's lacrosse and are coming off their best season in school history, finishing with a 6-10 record in 2019. All-time, the program out from Boiling Springs, N.C., holds a 14-71 record. Gardner-Webb will look to continue the momentum from last season with the promotion of Jessie Aguglia from Interim Head Coach (2018-19) to Head Coach (present).
Junior Talon Francis will look to lead the side as the only returning player having received Second Team All-Big South Conference Honors. Francis had a successful sophomore campaign with 29 goals. She added seven assists, 10 caused turnovers, 31 ground balls and a career-high 56 draw controls at the midfield position.

Duke will take the field against Northwestern for the 20th time in program history. The Wildcats lead the series 15-4. Northwestern took the last meeting in a thrilling 20-21 game in Evansville, Ill. Duke was led by Olivia Jenner with five goals, four assists and eight draw controls.
Legendary coach Kelly Amonte Hiller leads Northwestern. Amonte Hiller was named the 2020 recepient of the Tewaaraton Legends Award, the organization announced. Last season, Northwestern advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, taking out two ACC teams along with way. In the semifinal, the Wildcats fell 13-25 to eventual champions Maryland.
Northwestern was picked second in the Big Ten Preseason Poll with three players on the Preseason Players to Watch list. Seniors Megan Kinna and Linsey McKone made appearances as well as 2019 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and All-Big Ten honoree last season Izzy Scane.

Duke in the Polls
Duke begins the season ranked No. 21 in the Preseason Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll, the same ranking the club finished with last season in the final IWLCA 2019 Poll. After finishing 11-8, the Blue Devils return 27 letterwinners and eight starters and look to make a push towards the NCAA Tournament this season.
Challenging Slate Ahead
In 2020, the Blue Devils are scheduled to face 10 ranked opponents, including six of the top eight. Duke will play No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Northwestern, No. 4 Syracuse, No. 5 Boston College, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 8 Virginia, No. 12 Penn, No. 15 Navy, No. 23 Virginia Tech and No. 25 High Point.
The schedule features eight contests against opponents who were selected to the 2019 NCAA Championship field, including three of the four semifinalists - North Carolina, Boston College and Northwestern.
Duke Duo Tabbed Preseason All-America
Senior defender Callie Humphrey and sophomore Maddie Jenner were named Preseason All-America by Inside Lacrosse. Humphrey's, a third-team selection, earned recognition for a second consecutive year after being tabbed Honorable Mention last season. Jenner garnered Honorable Mention praise for draw controls and attack by the organization.
The senior from Summit, N.J., started all 19 games on defense just a year ago for the Blue Devils, leading Duke in ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (21). During the month of March, Humphrey registered at least one caused turnover a game for five straight outings. She added her first career goal and only score of her career against Davidson in a 17-8 victory on March 18.
Jenner appeared in 17 games last season, starting one. Her 88 draw controls helped Duke lead the country in draw control percentage (.657) and rank second in draw controls per game (18.74) in 2019. In addition, she added 13 goals, one assist, four ground balls and a caused turnover.
299 and KMKounting
Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel has tallied 299 career wins entering the 2020 season. The longtime and only head coach of Duke has produced a 295-136 record during her time with the Blue Devils. With her next win, Kimel will become the seventh active Division I coach to reach the 300-win milestone.

Bedeviling Opponents at the Draw
Sisters Olivia and Maddie Jenner combined to lead Duke at the draw last season with 150 and 88 draw controls, respectively. With her sister graduating in 2019, Maddie has big shoes to fill in the circle. Olivia's 88 draw controls last season was the fifth most for an individual in a single season in Duke history, behind her sister's four years and Emma Hamm in 2012. Her 88 were also the second most in Duke history for a freshman
Last season, Duke was one of the national leaders in gaining possession in the circle and set Duke records along the way. The Blue Devils' 305 draw controls last season was the second most by a team in Duke history, just two draws behind the 2009 team.

Jenner Shines at U-19 World Championships
Over the summer, Maddie Jenner was a member of the U.S. Under-19 team representing the United States at the World Lacrosse Women's U-19 World Championships. At the competition in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, Jenner helped team USA capture the gold medal with a 13-3 victory over Team Canada.
Jenner was named one of five U.S. players highlighting the 10-person World Team at the championships for their outstanding play throughout the tournament. Jenner joined Brianne Gross, Rachel Hall, Izzy Scane and Caitlyn Wurzburger.
Sunday's meeting will be slightly familiar for Jenner as Northwestern's coach Kelly Amonte Hiller lead the U.S. U-19 squad at Worlds this summer. In addition, four Wildcats were on the team with Jenner - Madison Doucette, Elle Hansen, Scane and Greta Stahl.
