Duke Suffers Narrow Loss
Air Force used a strong fourth quarter to post a comeback 14-13 victory over the Blue Devils Saturday. Duke led 6-1 at one point and held the lead for nearly 53 minutes, but a late push from the Falcons gave them their third victory in four meetings over the Blue Devils. Air Force also won the season opener over Duke in 2017, another one-goal victory at 11-10. It was just the third season-opening loss since 2007. In 2013, Duke lost to Denver before eventually going onto the NCAA Championship. The other loss was in 2017 to Air Force. Duke ended that year with a 13-5 record, losing in the NCAA quarterfinal.
Blue Devil Firsts
There was a collection of firsts for a host of Blue Devils this past Saturday in the loss to Air Force. Freshman
Kenny Brower and
Frank Marinello both made their first career starts on defense and rookie
Dyson Williams started on attack. Three Blue Devils notched their first career goals –
Owen Caputo,
Joe Stein and
Dyson Williams. Caputo also registered his first multiple-point game with a goal and three assists for four points.
Cameron Badour, in his second year of action, posted his first career assist, tossing a helper to Caputo.
Ginder with a Career Day at the X
Sophomore
Jordan Ginder won a career-best 15 faceoffs on a career-high 19 attempts Saturday. He picked up nine ground balls in the game. His .789 win percentage at the X was his second best percentage behind is 14-of-14 showing last year versus first-year program Utah last season. His career win percentage is 55 percent.
Badour Repeats Hat Trick
For the second consecutive season,
Cameron Badour started his campaign with a hat trick, including a couple of snipes to the top corners. He finished the day with three goals and an assist in the setback to the Falcons. The Ontario native also scored three goals against Furman a year ago in his first career game. For his career, Badour has 10 goals and an assist.
The Bands of Brothers
Two sets of brothers – Owen and
Jake Caputo and CJ and
Tyler Carpenter – took the field Saturday for the Blue Devils. The older brothers in both sets – Owen and CJ – run on offense for Duke, while Jake and Tyler are members of the defensive unit.
Owen, on the second midfield line, finished with a goal and three assists, CJ had two goals and two assists on attack. Both rookies Jake and Tyler had solid outings in their first collegiate games. Jake, a defensive midfielder, had one ground ball. Tyler picked up five ground balls and three caused turnovers as an LSM and on the faceoff wing.
Looking Ahead
The Blue Devils returned to work Monday afternoon looking ahead to High Point. The Panthers host Duke for a 12 p.m., faceoff Saturday. High Point is coming off a 23-12 loss to No. 4 Maryland this past Saturday. Coming off the most successful regular season in program history, which included wins over Duke and Virginia, High Point entered 2020 ranked 20th in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason media poll. The Panthers were voted second in the Southern Conference preseason poll and attackman Asher Nolting has headlined preseason honors with all-conference and All-America recognition. Nolting was a second-team pick preseason by Inside Lacrosse after tallying 87 points (43g, 44a) last season.
NLL Update
Former Blue Devil Myles Jones made his National Lacrosse League debut, joining Duke standout defenseman Michael Manley on the New York Riptide at the end of January. Jones played 11:45, picking up five ground balls and taking two shots and Manley had two ground balls and a caused turnover in 21 minutes on the field. The Riptide fell to former Duke star Zack Greer and the San Diego Seals. Greer finished his night with three goals and an assist in 19 minutes of action. Greer is the offensive leader for the Seals this season, scoring 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points. He also has 24 ground balls in eight games.
