DURHAM, N.C. – Powered by career-best performances, Duke softball used a six-run inning to defeat NC Central, 10-2, in sixth frames on Tuesday night at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Sophomore
Caroline Jacobsen had a career-high night at the plate, garnering two home runs and four RBI during a 2-for-3 performance. In the circle,
Brianna Butler picked up her fourth win (4-1) while racking up a career-high eight strikeouts.
The Blue Devils (13-2) recorded their sixth run-rule win of the 2020 season, marking the most in a single season in program history, while the Eagles dropped to 0-9 on the year.
NC Central got on the board first as Tamiera Sanchez sent a long ball out of the park to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Duke quickly answered in the bottom half as
Jameson Kavel reached on a leadoff hit-by-pitch and
Raine Wilson followed with a walk. The pair garnered three stolen bases before Kavel scored on a throwing error. Jacobsen put the Blue Devils ahead with a two-run homer (3-1), notching her fifth of the season.
After a scoreless second frame, the Eagles tacked on another run with a RBI double in the top of the third (3-2). Freshman
Felise Collins singled up the middle in the fourth, grabbing the fourth hit of her rookie campaign, and
Kyla Morris took over to run on first. Morris advanced on a sac bunt and eventually scored on an error (4-2).
Capitalizing on three hits, Duke scored six runs in the sixth frame.
Kendyl Lange began the inning with a leadoff hit-by-pitch and quickly picked up two stolen bases.
Dominique Salinas walked and stole second, putting runners on the corners for Kavel. Kavel brought home both runners with a bunt single and advanced to second on a bad throw from the pitcher.
Continuing the inning, Wilson recorded the first triple of her senior season and scored in the next at-bat as
Rachel Crabtree reached on an error. Jacobsen secured the early finish for the Blue Devils, sending a shot out of the park for a two-run homer while ending the game at 10-2.
The Blue Devils have a quick turnaround before heading to Raleigh, N.C. tomorrow for a 5 p.m. matchup against ACC foe, NC State.
