SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Duke fencing team closed out competition at the 2020 ACC Fencing Championship Sunday as the 10th-ranked Blue Devil men placed second in the team standings while the women finished in third.
The men started off with a 15-12 victory over North Carolina before a 19-8 rout of Boston College. Duke fell to No. 5 Notre Dame 16-11 in the final round to take second.
On the women's side, the Blue Devils fell to North Carolina (15-12) in the opening round before defeating Boston College (17-10). In the final round, the Blue Devil women fell 18-9 to eventual ACC Champion No. 3 Notre Dame.
The ACC Championship for both the Irish men and women mark the fifth conference crown in the last six years.
The Blue Devil men were led by senior saberist
Agoston Walter with a 7-2 overall record in the team event, followed by
Eoin Gronningsater (foil),
Jonathan Schwartzman (foil),
Danny Campbell III (epee),
Kevin Chao (epee) and
Amit Sarma (epee) with five wins each.
On the women's side, the team was led by
Huda Aldadah (epee) and
Maria Papadopoulos (epee) with six wins each. Foilist
Julia Gianneschi added five victories on the day.
Select Blue Devils will return to competition Saturday, March 7 for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional in Durham, N.C.
