DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore
Anna Callahan recorded her first career hat trick to power the Duke women's lacrosse team (3-2) to breeze by George Washington, 21-6, Saturday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils had a balanced attack, featuring 13 different goal scorers and eight players tallying at least one assist.
Junior
Abby Landry scored the first goal of the game off a free position shot before the Colonials (0-3) netted two to take an early lead with 23:56 remaining in the first half. Duke responded by going on a four-goal run, courtesy of
Lindsey Reynolds, Callahan,
Veronica Hineman and
Olivia Carner, to go up, 5-2.
After a George Washington goal interrupted the run at 15:40, Duke rattled off seven straight over the next 14:10.
Caroline DeBellis (twice),
Katie Cronin,
Maddie Jenner,
Catriona Barry, Hineman and Callahan all added to the cause to make it 12-3 with 1:30 remaining in the first half. The Colonials took one back just before the break, bringing the score to 12-4 at the half.
Duke tacked on nine more in the second half.
Olivia Rubin and
Catherine Cordrey scored a pair each while
Lexi Schmalz,
Virginia Oursler, Callahan, Reynolds and Jenner all added one.
The Blue Devils held the Colonials scoreless for over a 20-minute span. Defensively, Duke was led by Carner and
Callie Humphrey with three and two caused turnovers, respectively.
Junior
Chase Henriquez started in goal for Duke for the first time this season and third time in her career. The Norwell, Mass., native recorded three saves and picked up the win between the pipes.
DeBellis, one of the leading assisters in the nation, tallied six points on two goals and four assists. She now has 27 points this season (12 goals and 15 assists) to lead the Blue Devils.
The Colonials were led by Ioanna Mantzouratos with two goals and Tori Hampton with two assists.
The Blue Devils are back on the road this week for a weeknight tilt against William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., Wednesday evening. Opening draw is slated for 5 p.m.
