Live Stats
The Blue Devils face the Wofford Terriers for the first time in school history Thursday afternoon in the third game of the 2020 season. The Terriers open just their third season of play after going a combined 6-28 over the first two seasons. Wofford averaged 9.53 goals per game but boasted an .811 shooting percentage.
After a slow first two seasons, Wofford looks to realign the program with experienced head coach Kim Eldridge who will take the reins for the first time this season. The Terriers return their top two scorers from the 2019 season, Hannah Mutch and Ally Furnari. Mutch and Furnari combined for 65 points through the season with 27 and 28 goals, respectively.
Although having never faced Wofford, the Blue Devils have only faced one other team from the Southern Conference. Duke topped Furman, 20-5, on Feb. 10, 2017 in Koskinen Stadium.
Noting Duke:
Duke in the Polls
Duke begins the season ranked No. 21 in the Preseason Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll, the same ranking the club finished with last season in the final IWLCA 2019 Poll. The Blue Devils jumped up to the 18th spot in the most recent
Inside Lacrosse Media Poll after beginning the season at No. 20.
Business is Booming
The Duke offense has quickly jumped out to establish themselves as one of the top Division I teams in several statistical categories. The Blue Devils lead the country in shots per game (47.00) and shots on goal per game (35.50).
Duke also ranks among the nation's best in goals per game (third with 21.00) and draw controls per game (second with 22.00). Duke leads the ACC in both categories. A majority of the Blue Devils success in the circle has come from sophomore
Maddie Jenner. Jenner has produced 24 draw controls over two games so far this season nad her 12.00 draw controls per contest ties to lead the nation.
C. DeBellis Makes Her Mark
Freshman attacker
Caroline DeBellis did not take long to make her impact on Duke women's lacrosse. DeBellis leads the team with 12 points (five goals and seven assists) through the first two games. She is the first player to score 12 points in the first two games of their career since Kerrin Maurer in 2012.
In her Duke debut versus Gardner-Webb, the Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., native scored seven points by the way of three goals and four assists. Her seven points were the most in a Blue Devil debut since Maurer in 2012 who had eight.
DeBellis currently leads the nation in assists with seven and sits second in total points (12). She is the only player on the Duke roster to have more than one assists this season.
S. DeBellis Named Student Assistant Coach
Duke head coach
Kerstin Kimel announced Wednesday that redshirt junior
Sam DeBellis has shifted into a Student Assistant Coach role for the 2020 season.
DeBellis played in just one game for the Blue Devils before injury plagued her years in Durham. In that one game against Furman, the second game of the 2017 season (her freshman year), DeBellis scored a goal in the 20-5 feat of the Paladins.
Cronin and Barry Enjoy Career Day
Juniors
Katie Cronin and
Catriona Barry both had their best single-game performances of their careers against third-ranked Northwestern. Both student-athletes had four-goal performances to lead the Blue Devils.
Sunday was Cronin's first four-goal performance of her career, topping her three-goal performance against North Carolina in last season's ACC Semifinal. The Darien, Conn., native shot .800, went 3-for-4 from the 8-meter mark and added a caused turnover to the cause.
Barry also netted four for the hosts, the most for a single game in her career as well. In addition to her scoring, the Napa, Calif., product added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. She leads Duke in caused turnovers this season with four.
