DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing team swept the ACC Fencer of the Week awards following its performance at the annual Duke Meet, the conference announced Tuesday.
Earning the honor for the men was rookie
Finn Hossfeld while sophomore
Alex Gorman was tabbed the women's honoree.
Hossfeld helped the men's foil squad to a 4-1 overall ledger as the 10th-ranked Duke men defeated Johns Hopkins (21-6), Brandeis (17-10), MIT (16-11) and upset fourth-ranked Penn State (16-11).
The Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., native went 9-3 overall, including a 2-1 record versus fifth-ranked Notre Dame.
Gorman spearheaded the women's saber contingent go 3-2 during the highly competitive weekend that featured three teams ranked in the top 10. The Blue Devils defeated Brandeis (21-6) and MIT (20-7) and fell by a narrow margin (13-14) to fifth-ranked Temple.
Gorman's, who hails from Wellesley, Mass., 8-4 weekend performance was highlighted by a 3-0 undefeated showing against sixth-ranked Penn State in which she tallied three of the four bout victories for the Blue Devil saber squad.
Duke will have some time off to prepare for the ACC Championships slated for Feb. 22-23 in South Bend, Ind., hosted by Notre Dame.
