Duke Closes Time at Northwestern Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Duke fencing team closed out its time at the Northwestern Duals Saturday evening in Evanston, Ill., with 11 Blue Devils capturing double-digit wins.

The 10th-ranked Duke men went 5-2 on the day, defeating Air Force (19-8), UC San Diego (15-12), Stanford (14-13), Lawrence (26-1) and Incarnate Word (26-1) and fell to No. 3 Ohio State (14-13) and No. 6 Princeton (14-13) by narrow margins.

The Duke women picked up wins over Air Force (18-9), UC San Diego (18-9) and Stanford (18-9) before falling to No. 4 Ohio State (15-12), No. 1 Princeton (17-10) and No. 9 Northwestern (15-12).

The Blue Devils were led by epeeist Kevin Chao with a whopping 17 wins and just four losses to lead the entire team. Following close behind were foilist Jonathan Schwartzman (15-2), foilist Eoin Gronningsater (14-3) and Agoston Walter and Danny Campbell III with 13-7 records in saber and epee, respectively.

The women were led by senior and co-captain Lindsay Sapienza with an 11-4 overall ledger followed by Alex Gorman and Huda Aldadah with 10-5 and 10-7 records, respectively. Sophomore Zoe Superville also added nine wins on the day for the foil squad.

The Blue Devils will return to Durham to host the annual Duke Meet Feb. 8-9 in Card Gym.
