DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke men's fencing team took the strips Saturday to open competition at the annual Duke Meet in Card Gymnasium. The Blue Devil men posted a 4-1 overall record and was highlighted by a dominant 16-11 win over fourth-ranked Penn State.
The men defeated Johns Hopkins (21-6), Brandeis (17-10), MIT (16-11) and Penn State (16-11) to close out the regular season prior to the ACC Championships at the end of February. The Blue Devils' only loss came to fifth-ranked Notre Dame (17-10).
The foil squad went 4-1 on the day that included an impressive 7-2 win over the Nittany Lions. Freshmen
Sam Gruber and
Finn Hossfeld both posted 9-3 ledgers on the day while
Jonathan Schwartzman added a 7-3 showing. Senior and co-captain
Eoin Gronningsater went 6-2 in which he went undefeated against fourth-ranked Penn State.
The saber side was led by
Agoston Walter and
Ben Stone with eight wins each. For the epee squad,
Amit Sarma and
Danny Campbell III added eight and seven victories, respectively.
Sunday's portion of the Duke Meet will feature the women's competition, scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., in Card Gymnasium.
