CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman
Sarah Foley's time of 2:08.96 broke Duke's 200 breaststroke record on the final day of the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill.
In just her second collegiate meet, Foley set a career best and etched her name into the Duke record books by setting a program record in the 200 breaststroke. Foley's time also placed her third in the event.
Duke kicked off the evening in the 1,650 freestyle. Freshman
Emily Gjertsen competed on the women's side, finishing sixth in the event in 16:45.90, the eighth-fastest time in Duke history. For the men, sophomores
Brendan Driscoll and
Chris Dalla Valle placed eighth and 11th in the event with times of 15:30.17 and 15:36.07, respectively. Those times placed them eighth and ninth all-time at Duke in the event.
Freshman
Emily Lenihan shined in the 200 backstroke, winning the 'B' Final in a time of 1:56.79, the fourth fastest time in Duke history.
Shayna Hollander also reached the 'B' Final and placed 12th overall in the event.
On the men's side in the 200 backstroke, junior
David Hallaron won the 'B' Final by swimming the sixth fastest time of the evening and second-quickest in program history (1:44.31). Freshman
David Chang competed in the 'B' Final, placing ninth overall by touching in 1:47.42. His time placed him ninth in the Duke record books.
The Duke women continued to find success in the 100 freestyle. Senior
Quinn Scannell swam the fourth-fastest time in school history (49.26) to place third overall. Sophomores
Sarah Snyder and
Olivia Tighe also performed well, taking the top two spots in the 'B' Final. Snyder's time earned her 10th in program lore.
Freshman
Zach McIntyre and sophomore
Charlie Gingrich reached the 'B' Final in the 100 freestyle by swimming career-best times in the morning preliminaries. McIntyre's time of 44.29 was the ninth-fastest in Duke history while Gingrich recorded a career-best 44.76.
In addition to Foley's record-breaking swim in the 200 breaststroke, sophomore
Kayle Park placed seventh in the event. Her time of 2:11.96 was the third-fastest in school history.
Juniors
Cole Reznick and
Colson Zucker also made waves in the 200 breaststroke. Reznick continued his successful week by placing fourth in the event with a time of 1:57.69, the sixth-fastest time in Blue Devil history. Zucker placed third in the 'B' Final of the event, touching the wall in 1:59.74. His time placed him 10th on the all-time charts.
Duke concluded the day in the 200 butterfly as junior
Cabell Whitlow led three Blue Devils in the 'A' Final by placing second overall with a time of 1:57.33. Joining her in the 'A' Final were freshman
Catherine Purnell, who reached the final by swimming a career-best 1:57.90 that placed sixth in Duke history, and junior
Lucy Callard (1:59.68).
The Blue Devils closed out their fall season on Saturday and await the announcement of meets to continue their 2020-21 season.
