DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing team received its first signee for the 2021-22 recruiting class as epeeist
Rachel Kowalsky signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Blue Devil family.
Kowalsky comes to Durham from Oyster Bay, N.Y., and currently attends Oyster Bay High School. She is a member of the New York Fencing Academy under Sergey Danilov and also fenced in high school under John Bruckner.
Kowalsky has racked up numerous accolades throughout her fencing career and was named captain of her high school fencing team for the 2019-20 season and was named the team's MVP. She was tabbed a second team All-American in 2018-19 and also earned first team All-Academic accolades.
In 2019, Kowalsky collected a gold medal at the Maccabi Games in Budapest, Hungary in individual epee and also earned a gold medal in the team event. She has competed in multiple junior Olympic competitions and North American Cups (NAC) from 2017-20.
In addition to fencing, Kowalsky lettered four years in tennis and three years in badminton. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Honor Society, she is an AP Scholar with Distinction and is part of the Oyster Bay High School Academic Hall of Fame.
The Blue Devils open the 2021 slate Feb. 6-7 in Columbus, Ohio with a dual meet against Ohio State.
