DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing team received its second signee for the 2021-22 season as saberist
Vivien Buchmann signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Blue Devil family.
Buchmann was born in Nürnberg, Germany but comes to Durham from Kinnelon, N.J., where she attended Kinnelon High School. She was a member of the Kaprica United Fencing Academy under
Stephen Kovacs and also fenced at her high school.
Buchmann represents Germany on the international fencing circuit but has been training in the United States since 2016. Most of her results were in Germany to ensure her spot on Germany's travel team for World Cups.
She earned a top-8 finish at the 2019 Germany Junior Nationals and a top-16 placement in 2019 at the Germany National Senior event. She also placed in the top 32 at the 2017 Junior World Cup in Costa Rica.
On the United States circuit, Buchmann has attended nearly all of the North American Cups (NACs) since 2017 and earned a top-16 finish at the 2019 July Challenge for juniors.
Outside of fencing, Buchmann is a member of the National Honor Society, was enrolled in AP classes throughout her four years in high school and writes in her school newspaper.
The Blue Devils open the 2021 slate Feb. 6-7 in Columbus, Ohio with a dual meet against Ohio State.
