DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke swimming and diving team recorded an abundance of strong times last weekend at the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C, to close out their fall season before returning to the pool in January.
Â
Overall, Duke boasted 110 career-best times. Of those 110 times, 32 reached the top-10 charts in school history and 10 of them made it into the top five of their respective events. Duke broke one school record as well.
Â
"We were thrilled, absolutely thrilled, with our performances this weekend," head coach
Dan Colella said. "Under the current pandemic, so many of our athletes, like so many others, did not have the opportunity to train all summer. We've had 12 or 13 weeks of great training with that going into the meet. We knew we were going to be competitive, but we didn't know how well they were going to swim. We just had an absolute ton of lifetime bests. I think the biggest takeaway was just how energized and how great an attitude the group had. Overall, it was just exciting to finally be back in that kind of environment and racing. It was just a great, great weekend."

Freshman
Sarah Foley was the lone Blue Devil to break a school record over the weekend in Chapel Hill. In just her second meet, the Philadelphia, Pa., native swam a 2:08.96 in the 200 breaststroke for the fastest time in Blue Devil history.
Â
Of the 10 times that broke into the top five in school history, Foley recorded three of them. In addition to her school record in the 200 breaststroke, she found herself second in program lore in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.06) and 200 individual medley (1:57.44).
Â
Junior
Cole Reznick also recorded multiple times that placed in him the top five in two events. He kicked off the meet with a 3:49.36 in the 400 individual medley, the second-fastest time in school history. Then, later in the week, he touched in 1:45.70 in the 200 individual medley for the third-quickest time.
Â
Senior
Quinn Scannell enjoyed a great meet at the Janis Hape Dowd Invitational, placing in the top five in three individual events and winning the 200 freestyle. Her winning time of 1:47.45 in the 200 freestyle was the fourth-fastest at Duke.
Â
Foley wasn't the only Blue Devil to have success in the 200 breaststroke as sophomore
Kayle Park was right on her heels. Park swam a career-best 2:11.96 and became the third Blue Devil to go under 2:12 in the event. She currently sits third on the all-time chart.
Â
Freshman
Emily Lenihan also recorded a top-five time in just her second collegiate meet. The backstroke specialist touched in 1:56.79 in the 200 backstroke for the fourth-fastest time in Duke history to win the 'B' Final Saturday night.
Â
On the men's side in the 200 backstroke, junior
David Hallaron recorded a career-best time of 1:44.31 in the event to move to second in Duke history. His time won the 'B' Final as well.
Â
Sophomore
Charlie Gingrich garnered a career-best time in the 100 butterfly. His time of 47.25 vaulted him up the school charts to hold the fourth-fastest time at Duke.
Â
The Janis Hape Dowd Invitational was Duke's final meet of 2020, but the Blue Devils will return to action in January 2021 as they continue to prepare for the 2020-21 postseason.
