DURHAM, N.C.—It has been nine years since he's worn a football helmet and seven since donning a Duke lacrosse helmet, but when the Northern Illinois football team takes to the field for the first time in 2020 Wednesday night former Blue Devil two-sport athlete Greg DeLuca will take to the gridiron for one final run.
Pursuing a master's degree in sports psychology at NIU, DeLuca decided to use his final year of athletic eligibility with the Huskies. He played four years of lacrosse at Duke, but only spent two season with the Duke football team, leaving him one more year to be a collegiate athlete according to NCAA eligibility rules.
DeLuca played two seasons of football at Duke – 2010 and 2011 – and won a pair of national titles as a standout defensive midfielder for the Blue Devils' lacrosse team. Now, after six years in the U.S. Navy as a member of SEAL Team 10 and Special Reconnaissance Team 2, getting married, and welcoming his newborn son to the world, DeLuca is ready to let the competitive juices flow again for the Huskies' football team.
A native of Boonton Township, N.J., DeLuca joined the football team at Duke his sophomore season as a walk-on after helping the Blue Devil lacrosse team to its first NCAA Championship in 2010.
In his first season on the gridiron, DeLuca played in six games for a total of 66 snaps. He saw action on special teams in the six games. He returned the football field as a junior and played in a pair of games and had one rush for one yard versus Tulane.
On the lacrosse field, DeLuca was a defensive force over the course of his career. He played in 68 games as a d-middie, was crucial on the faceoff wing and took 89 faceoffs during his career. He helped Duke to two NCAA Championships – 2010 and 2013 – four consecutive championship weekends and the 2012 ACC title. Individually, the Mountain Lakes product finished his career with seven goals and three assists as a defensive midfielder, picked up 71 ground balls and forced 21 turnovers.
As a senior, while also working towards pursuing becoming a Navy SEAL, he scored five goals and picked up 25 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. DeLuca registered a goal and an assist in the NCAA semifinal win over Cornell as Duke marched its way to a second national championship. In the title game against Syracuse, he had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
DeLuca, as mentioned previously, went on to become a Navy SEAL after graduation and spent six years serving in the U.S. Navy. He and former Duke track and field athlete Baily Murphy got married March 9, 2019 at Duke. They recently welcomed a son, Patrick, to the family.
Kickoff for the Huskies against Buffalo is set for Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
