DURHAM, N.C.—All good things must come to an end. And after seven weeks in existence, the Duke Outdoor Lacrosse League aka the D.O.L.L. sadly concluded its inaugural season this past Saturday, crowning Peithos as the champion.
McSallies and Peithos first met in an exhibition game as the teams' front offices were given the opportunity to organize their personnel before regular season contests commenced. Peithos took the exhibition game before McSallies regrouped and won the season opener.
A schedule change to Friday night under the lights proved valuable for Peithos as they evened the series at one apiece. However, McSallies took over and won the next two games to take a 3-1 lead with two regular season games left – both by a single goal.
Donning the all Duke Blue uniforms in regular season game five, Peithos sophomore
Dyson Williams put the team back in the win column with an overtime goal heading into the regular season finale.
With McSallies thinking they were clinging to a 3-2 lead in the D.O.L.L. standings, the league's Chief Marketing Officer
John Danowski announced the first game, which was thought to be an exhibition game did in fact count towards both teams' regular season records.
The CMO said it was his plan all along. "It's a great lesson to any and all athletes, play every game like it's your last," said Danowski. "Maybe a player takes a play off in an exhibition game thinking, hey what's the big deal? Well, now it's a HUGE DEAL. Now, exhibition games might have championship implications, you just never know."
What did that ruling mean? It meant the two teams headed into the final game with three wins apiece and it was winner take all in the final outing at the Cohan Fields.
After heavy rains from Eta poured down on Durham in the middle of the week, the D.O.L.L. leadership decided to move the title game to Saturday afternoon to assure quality field conditions.
Peithos and McSallies hit Cohan Fields at high noon Saturday. The game got off to a bit of a rocky start with some championship game jitters. The game remained close in the early going before Peithos, behind the scoring of the Canadian duo of
Cameron Badour and Williams, started to pull away.
McSallies struggled at times to clear the ball as the Peithos ride and defense were outstanding. Peithos took an 8-3 lead into halftime.
Wearing its tradition all black uniforms, McSallies scored early in the third to pull back within four, but like it proved to do all afternoon Peithos had an answer just moments later. McSallies got a couple goals from veteran
Sean Lowrie and
Michael Sowers and got within three a couple of times, but wasn't able to get over the hump as Peithos came away with the 14-10 win for the D.O.L.L. Cup.
While it is sad to see the D.O.L.L. season one come to a close, the ride was fun. Five of the seven games were decided by a single goal with three of them going into overtime. The commissioner
Matt Danowski deserves great credit for a fantastic league, while the front offices of the teams were excellent from start to finish.
The Blue Devils will finish their classes this week and prepare for exam week to close out the semester at the end of the month.
