CARY, N.C. – Freshman
Jack Kovach bested his previous 8K time by a minute and 25 seconds to lead the way for the Duke men's cross country team at the NC State Invitational Wednesday morning.
Kovach clocked a finishing time of 25:21.1 to place 28th overall on the WakeMed Cross Country course, eclipsing his mark of 26:46.7 at Virginia Tech two weeks ago. The Blue Devils went on to finish fourth as a team in Wednesday's meet, trailing first-place Virginia, second-place NC State and third-place North Carolina.
Following Kovach for the Blue Devils was sophomore
Ryan Thompson, who also bested his time in the season-opening meet by posting a 25:37.8 mark, good for 30th in the field. Duke would then take finishes 33-35, as junior
Devin Connell (26:32.9) made his season debut while sophomore
Lucas Wiley (26:36.7) and freshman
Will Atkins (26:41.3) both competed in their first collegiate cross country race.
"Our middle distance guys had a good effort and challenged themselves today," interim head coach
Rhonda Riley said.
Duke returns to action on Friday, Oct. 16, when the team travels to Earlysville, Va., for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. More information on the meet, including start times and lineups, will be announced at a later date.
