WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In its second straight overtime match, Duke field hockey came up just short, losing to Wake Forest, 2-1, in Kentner Stadium. The Blue Devils (0-6, 0-4 ACC) struck first, but the Demon Deacons (2-5, 1-3 ACC) scored a pair of unanswered goals to win the game in the 64th minute of the ACC matchup.
"Overall, I thought we played an aggressive game today," said head coach
Pam Bustin. "Playing a dangerous counterattacking team can sometimes make you tentative in your aggression, but we earned many attacking opportunities to put us in a position to win this game."
Scoreless after the first period, senior
Lexi Davidson connected for the second consecutive game on a penalty stroke, striking the top left corner of the cage to give Duke a 1-0 lead at the 20:40-minute mark. With the goal, Davidson is 4-for-4 in penalty strokes for her career.
"Lexi was a great leader again today," said Bustin. "She's becoming more and more confident in her role and how our team responds. A leader is always prepared, and she was ready to take that stroke again."
Statistically, the teams were neck-and-neck at the half with each registering seven shots and two saves apiece. The Blue Devils took three shots on frame to the Demon Deacons' two.
Wake Forest tied the contest in the 39th minute as Meike Lanckohr dribbled around the Blue Devils' defense to score.
Following the Demon Deacons' goal in the third period, neither team was able to jump ahead, forcing overtime play in Winston-Salem. Three minutes into overtime, Duke freshman goaltender
Piper Hampsch made a crucial save for Duke, but just over a minute later, Wake Forest's Grace Delmotte knocked in a pass from Abby Carpenter past Hampsch for the game winner.
The Blue Devils outshot the Demon Deacons, 14-12, and took 15 corners to Wake Forest's four. Duke's 15 corners were the most taken in a single game since earning 12 against Virginia on Nov. 7, 2019.
Hampsch made three saves in the contest while Wake Forest tallied two.
Three Blue Devils recorded career highs in shots with
Darcy Bourne (5),
Eva Nunnink (4) and Davidson (2).
Duke returns to action Sunday, Oct. 25 against Wake Forest in a non-conference matchup at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. start and will be nationally televised on ACCN.
