DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke swimmer and Olympian
Nancy Hogshead-Makar was named to Sports Illustrated's "The Unrelenting" last week, announced by the publication.
The list exemplifies women within sports that are trailblazers in the movement towards gender equality, social justice and athletic greatness. The diverse group of honorees spans across many sports, ages, cultures and races but all are speaking out and making a difference in their respective communities.
Hogshead-Makar swam at Duke in 1981, capturing four ACC Championships (500-yard freestyle, 1,650y freestyle, 200y butterfly and 400y individual medley) and earning All-America honors in the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley. Hogshead-Makar still holds times that are in the top-10 of Duke's records to this day.
After her time at Duke, Hogshead-Makar competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. At the games, she earned three gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle, the 4 x 100m freestyle relay and the 4 x 100m medley relay. She also earned a silver medal in the 200m individual medley.
Hogshead-Makar later became the first woman to be inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
