VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – After coming back from a pair of one-goal deficits, Duke field hockey was edged in a highly contested match, falling 4-3 to Syracuse on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
With the loss, the Blue Devils move to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in ACC play while the Orange notched their first victory, improving to 1-2 and 1-1.
"The energy was fantastic," said head coach
Pam Bustin. "We had an opportunity to win that game today and I wish we had, because without Duke University Game Operations, this game wouldn't have happened, and we took pride in that."
Sophomore
Hannah Miller recorded her first two goals of the season for the Blue Devils, while the Orange were led by freshman Florine van Boetzelaer with a two-goal performance.
The game remained tied at 3-3 for the majority of the fourth quarter, but a goal by Syracuse's Laura Graziosi in the 53rd minute would be the game winner.
Following Miller's opening tally off a deflection in the fourth minute, Syracuse answered seven minutes later off a rebounded save from freshman
Piper Hampsch in the cage (1-1). The Orange grabbed the lead at the end of the first frame with a go-ahead goal from Charlotte de Vries (2-1).
Miller, striking back-to-back goals for the Blue Devils, recorded the lone goal in the second quarter on a pass from junior
Leah Crouse. The Malvern, Pa. native dribbled around the Orange goalkeeper to find an open goal, tying the game at 2-2 before the half.
Syracuse reclaimed the lead 12 minutes into the third stanza as van Boetzelaer tallied her second goal of the contest. Duke quickly answered, responding 59 seconds later with freshman duo
Darcy Bourne and
Alayna Burns. Bourne found room on the top of the circle to fire a shot. Burns was right there to capitalize on the deflection for her first goal as a Blue Devil (3-3).
Action intensified in the fourth with each team looking to take back the lead. Despite pulling Hampsch out with less than three minutes to play, the Orange's goal at 52:07 would secure the 4-3 win.
Hampsch made five saves in the contest, improving to 18 on the season while Syracuse's Syd Taylor recorded three.
"We have to evaluate our performance here today and get better in situations under pressure," said Bustin. "Even when the opponent pushes pressure up, we need to keep playing our game."
The Blue Devils return to action next Sunday, Oct. 18, with a short trip to Chapel Hill to play North Carolina at Karen Shelton Stadium. Sunday's contest has been moved to a 12 p.m., start and will be nationally televised on the ACC Network.
