Duke Travels to Midwest for Northwestern Duals
DURHAM, N.C. – Following a week off from competition, the Duke fencing team returns to action Saturday, Feb. 1 for the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill.
This will be the toughest weekend so far for the ninth-ranked Blue Devil men and the women as they face three teams tabbed in the top 10 of the CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll.
The women are slated to take on Air Force, UC San Diego, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 2 Princeton and Stanford. The men will battle Air Force, UC San Diego, Incarnate Word, Lawrence, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Princeton and Stanford.
At last year's Northwestern Duals, the Duke women went 9-2 over the two-day meet while the men posted a 9-1 overall record. The then eighth-ranked women were victorious over three ranked opponents in No. 5 Ohio State (18-9), No. 6 Princeton (17-10) and No. 10 Temple (17-10). The then 10th-ranked men defeated two ranked foes in No. 1 Notre Dame (14-13) and No. 7 Ohio State (18-9).
In their last time out, rookie Danny Campbell III was tabbed ACC Male Fencer of the Week following his performance at the Philadelphia Invitational. The men's epee squad went 3-2 on the day and was led by Campbell with 11 victories and only three losses. The Oakton, Va., native tallied an undefeated 3-0 showing in the thrilling 14-13 win over NYU.
Through two meets in the 2020 season, the women's squad is led by Julia Gianneschi (foil), Ashley Lo (foil) and Alex Gorman (saber) with 19 wins apiece. On the men's side, Ben Stone (saber) and Ping Ping Kitsiriboon (saber) own a season-best 18 wins followed closely behind by Brycen Rushing (foil), Eoin Gronningsater (foil) and Agoston Walter (saber) with 17.
Following this weekend, the Blue Devils will return to Durham to host the annual Duke Meet Feb. 8-9 in Card Gym.
