John Danowski has announced the 2020 schedule. The Blue Devils will play eight games at home and go up against seven NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. Voted fifth in the US Lacrosse preseason poll, Duke will face eight of the magazine's preseason top 20 teams.
Kick Off 2020 NCAA Lacrosse Season at Koskinen Highlights Busy February
Duke will be one of a short list of teams opening the season Feb. 1. The Blue Devils welcome Air Force Academy to Koskinen Stadium, renewing the rivalry between with the Falcons. Duke is 7-4 overall against Air Force and 4-2 under Danowski.
The Blue Devils spend the next three weekends on the road at Inside Lacrosse's preseason No. 17 High Point, No. 9 Denver and a neutral site game at Matthews Sportsplex Stadium in Charlotte against a preseason top-10 Penn squad.
Duke and the Pioneers continue the thrilling annual February matchup for a sixth consecutive year. The Blue Devils are on a two-game win streak, including last year's final second victory on a goal from
Joey Manown. Duke has won just once in Denver – an 11-8 victory in 2003 – and is 0-2 against the Pioneers since 2007.
Penn is coming off one of its most successful seasons in history, winning the Ivy League title and falling just short in the NCAA quarterfinal. The Blue Devils are 5-5 against the Quakers overall and 4-3 under Danowski. Duke, which has never beaten Penn in Philadelphia, owns an average win margin of 4.6 goals in the five home victories. The two teams will square off in an exciting neutral site contest.
The Blue Devils, 3-1 all-time against the Spiders, wrap up the month hosting Richmond Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
The Gauntlet that is March
Duke will play six games in a span of 25 days in March, which includes two trips to Baltimore. The Blue Devils start the month against Furman before traveling to take on Loyola.
The matchup against the Greyhounds is always a must-watch game on Duke's schedule. The Blue Devils are 21-12 against Loyola and 12-4 since 2007. Winners in the previous three meetings, Duke last lost to the Greyhounds during the regular season in 2014.
The Blue Devils return home for a spring break midweek game against Jacksonville before heading back to Baltimore to face off against preseason No. 18 Towson. A recently renewed rivalry between the two programs, Duke has won the past two meetings by a combined four goals, edging the Tigers by two in 2018 and 2019.
With nine non-conference games under their belts, the Blue Devils open ACC play March 22 against Syracuse, ranked eighth by Inside Lacrosse. This ACC matchup has been one of the fiercest in the past few years with six of the eight meetings being decided by one goal and three going into overtime. Syracuse has won four straight, three of which came in the regular season. Duke's last win over the Orange was a 16-15 thriller in overtime at Koskinen in 2016.
It's a quick turnaround for the Blue Devils as they host North Carolina in a Thursday night ACC matchup March 26. The Tar Heels bested Duke in Chapel Hill last season, but the Blue Devils have been on top for the past 10 seasons, going 8-5 in the 13 meetings.
Top Opponents Await in April
The final month of the regular season starts on the road at ACC foes No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 1 Virginia. The Blue Devils have won the past four matchups with the Irish, including last year's 14-8 victory at Koskinen.
The ACC slate concludes on a Thursday night in Charlottesville against reigning NCAA Champion Virginia. Virginia upended Duke in double overtime in the NCAA semifinals last season for its first win over the Blue Devils since 2010. Overall, Duke has dominated the Cavaliers in the regular season, winning 14 straight. Overall, the Blue Devils are 18-2 against Virginia since 2007.
Duke returns home April 18 to host Marquette. The Blue Devils have never lost to the Eagles after escaping with a 10-9 overtime win last season at the Battle at Bethpage.
The ACC Tournament closes the month in a return to the Friday and Sunday format of past years. Played on the home field of the regular season champion, the tournament will feature the top four teams April 24 and 26.
May Madness
Duke finishes the regular season May 3 against Utah. The Blue Devils bested the Utes in their inaugural season in 2019 and will be looking for a final tune-up with hopes of playing in a first-round NCAA Tournament game the next weekend.
The NCAA first round will be May 9-10 on campus sites. The quarterfinal games will be held in Long Island and Providence, while Championship Weekend returns to Philadelphia for a second straight year.
