DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's lacrosse team will open its season this Saturday ranked fifth and seventh in the USILA and Inside Lacrosse Preseason polls, respectively. The Blue Devils finished last season ranked tied for third with Penn State in the USILA coaches' poll.
Reigning NCAA Champion Virginia tops the USILA list with 311 points, while Penn State is second. Yale, Maryland and Duke round out the top five, respectively. Overall, eight of Duke's 2020 opponents are ranked in the USILA top 20 with six being in the top 10. Inside Lacrosse has Penn State as its No. 1 squad with 11 first-place votes and Virginia at No. 2. Yale, Maryland and ACC foe Syracuse complete the top five. Nine of the Blue Devils' foes are among Inside Lacrosse's top 20 picks.
Duke was tabbed sixth in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook and fifth in the Preseason Nike/US Lacrosse rankings. Under the guidance of 14th-year head coach
John Danowski, the Blue Devils return a core of their starters from a year ago, including preseason All-American
JT Giles-Harris on defense and multiple threats on the offensive end. Danowski and company also welcomed 13 talented newcomers to the program, adding young depth on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Duke is one of 24 programs to open its season Feb. 1 with the matchup against Air Force being televised by the ACC Network. Chris Cotter and Quint Kessenich are on the call. Faceoff is 2 p.m., at Koskinen.
