DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team registered its fourth victory over the last five contests Sunday as the Blue Devils downed Georgia Tech, 58-46, in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils improved to 11-9 overall and 5-4 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 14-6, 5-4. Duke improved to 9-2 on the season at home in Cameron.
Graduate Haley Gorecki led the Blue Devils with a game-high 18 points, while grabbing four rebounds, three steals and dishing three assists. Senior Leaonna Odom added 16 points, while sophomore Onome Akinbode-James chipped in 10 rebounds.
Duke got off to a good start opening the contest with a 7-2 lead as graduate Kyra Lambert drained a three-pointer, junior Jade Williams added a layup and Gorecki had a strong finish with her left hand. The Yellow Jackets came back with a 9-2 run of their own, including hitting five straight shots, to even the score, 9-9. The Blue Devils were held without a field goal for the final 5:35 of the first quarter and trailed 14-9 as Duke hit only 26.7 percent from the field.
Sophomore Miela Goodchild drained her first three-pointer of the day at the 7:33 mark of the second quarter to end the Duke drought of nearly eight minutes without a field goal with the Blue Devils trailing, 16-12. Goodchild, a product of Queensland, Australia, hit another trey and then Lambert grabbed a steal and finished a fast break to give Duke the lead back, 17-16, with 6:26 remaining in the quarter.
Duke held Georgia Tech scoreless for over five minutes and went on a 16-0 run to take a 25-17 lead. The Blue Devils went on to outscore the Yellow Jackets, 24-9, in the second quarter and led 33-23 at the half.
The Blue Devils hit 9-of-15 field goals and limited Georgia Tech to 3-of-9 shooting in the second quarter. Duke forced 13 Yellow Jacket turnovers in the first half and scored 14 points off those turnovers.
Duke was led by Gorecki and Goodchild with nine points each as the duo combined to hit 4-of-7 treys.
Georgia Tech came out on fire in the third period outscoring Duke, 14-2, to take a 37-35 lead. The Yellow Jackets hit 6-of-10 field goals and limited Duke to only two points over the first six minutes of the quarter.
Duke closed strong going on a 11-2 run to take a 46-39 lead and took a 48-42 advantage into the final quarter.
The Blue Devil defense once again clamped down on the Yellow Jackets holding them without a field goal until the 4:36 mark of the fourth as Duke had built a 53-42 lead. Duke closed the game on a 5-0 run to bring home the victory.
In the fourth quarter, Duke limited Georgia Tech to only four points and held the Yellow Jackets to 40.4 percent shooting for the game. Duke held a 32-25 advantage on the boards and swiped 13 steals on 24 turnovers.
Goodchild finished the game with nine points on 3-of-4 treys, while Lambert added seven points.
Duke will be off Thursday, before hosting NC State Sunday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m., live on ACC Network Extra.
