DURHAM, N.C. – Head Coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are pleased to announce the addition of Ithika Senthilnathan to compete for the Blue Devils in the fall of the 2020-21 season.
Senthilnathan comes to Durham from Wellesley, Mass., where she attends Wellesley High School and competes for Community Rowing, Inc., in Boston. She coxed her V8 team to a first-place finish at the 2019 Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and also helped the V8 boat place eighth at the Head of the Charles 2019 – marking the first top-10 finish in over 10 years for the Community Rowing girls' team.
Senthilnathan's sister, Tteja, also coxed in high school at Community Rowing and now competes for Columbia University. Ithika is the daughter of Sree Balamurugesh.
What has been your favorite rowing memory?
IS: My favorite rowing memory was training for and racing at the Head of the Charles 2019 – it was such a tight-knit and motivated group of girls and we were so excited to push ourselves every day at practice. Even without knowing the result after, we were so proud of how we raced it and the energy and bond we felt as a boat was incredibly thrilling and highly motivating for future races.
How did you get started in rowing?
IS: When my sister became a coxswain at CRI, I went to all of her regattas and got inspired by the dedication, energy and working together. I joined CRI in 8th grade and started coxing, and immediately fell in love with the sport and the team.
Why did you choose Duke?
IS: I chose Duke because it was a perfect balance of academics and athletics – it has such a supportive environment for student-athletes, and the team was such a tight-knit community. I could tell immediately that the team was incredibly motivated to work hard and go fast, without compromising any focus on academics.
