DURHAM, N.C.—US Lacrosse recently announced a trimmed down U.S. men's U19 training roster as the team prepares for the 2020 World Lacrosse Men's U19 World Championship this summer. Current freshman
Jake Caputo and future Blue Devils Jake Naso and Brennan O'Neill are among the 24 players on narrowed roster.
U.S. head coach Nick Myers and his staff narrowed the training roster to 24 players, just one above the maximum allowed under World Lacrosse rules, following the Spring Premiere in San Antonio in early January. The U19 team won both of its games, beating Canada's Team Premiere 17-3 and Japan 14-2.
Naso and O'Neill are two of the five high school seniors on the 24-player list, while Duke is one of four programs to have multiple players on the team. Yale leads the way with five and the Blue Devils and Ohio State both have three apiece.
Caputo begins his freshman campaign with the Blue Devils Feb. 1 against Air Force. The local product tallied 71 points and 62 ground balls as a senior to cap an outstanding career at Middle Creek High School. At the Under Armour All-America game this past summer, Caputo led all scorers on the South team with five points from two goals and three assists.
Naso and O'Neill are heading into their final season at St. Anthony's in Long Island. In 2019, the duo were instrumental in leading the program to the CHSAA State Championship. O'Neill had seven goals in the 14-13 win, while Naso finished the season with an 80-percent success rate at the X.
The U.S. team has a training camp scheduled for early June at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md., and then a brief camp in early July before heading to Limerick, Ireland for the 2020 World Lacrosse Men's U19 World Championship. Barring any injuries or other circumstances, the staff will make one cut from the current training roster before finalizing the roster for the world championship.
A total of 104 players have participated in the tryout process, which began in June 2019. The team held two tryout weekends at US Lacrosse last summer and competed against Culver Academy and the Hill Academy at Ohio State last November before this month's Spring Premiere to get to the current 24-player roster. The players on the training roster come from high schools in 10 different states and represent 14 different college programs (enrollment and commitments).
The United States is the only nation to have won the World Lacrosse Men's U19 Championship, having rallied to beat Canada 13-12 in 2016 on Ryan Conrad's game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining. That was the eighth straight world championship for the U.S., which also won gold medals in 1988, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2008 and 2012.
