PHOENIX, Ariz. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team opened the 2020 season on a high note by blanking Grand Canyon, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix, Ariz.
With the victory, the Blue Devils are 1-0 in the early season as the Lopes fall to 0-1.
"It was a great first match for us," head coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "It's been a great trip overall. Yes we had the match, but we wanted to get in some good quality team time together. Going out there today, we had three girls who had never played a dual match for us in our lineup in Yasmine, Chloe and Summer. I was really happy with the emotion we played with. We talked to them a little after the match – that it doesn't matter who is on the other side of the net as long as we're doing things the right way. I thought we were able to do that. Overall, a great start."
Duke got off to a quick start by capturing the doubles point, giving the Blue Devils a leg up heading into singles.
Kelly Chen and
Chloe Beck were first off for Duke as they defeated Emilia Occhipinti/Celina Buhr in straight games, 6-0.
Meible Chi and
Hannah Zhao sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Ludovica Infantino/Autum Prudhomme before doubles action concluded with
Yasmine Mansouri and
Margaryta Bilokin defeating Jana Weiss/Natasha Puehse, 6-2.
The Blue Devils were absolutely dominant in singles action, dropping just nine games across all six courts.
Beck, who is ranked No. 25 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, was first off for the Blue Devils with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Infantino on court five before graduate student
Summer Dvorak tallied their third point with another straight-set victory over Martina Lo Pumo.
No. 77 Chi defeated Weiss (6-1, 6-2) on court four while No. 10 Chen took down Occhipinti (6-0, 6-1) on Duke's top court. Mansouri and No. 67 Bilokin tallied the final two points for the Blue Devils as Mansouri defeated Puehse (6-1, 6-2) on court two before Bilokin's 6-0, 6-2 win over Buhr on court three.
The Blue Devils will kick off their home slate Wednesday, Jan. 22 against Elon at 3 p.m.
